ECOLOGICAL ZONING AND DELINEATION OF THE TERRITORY OF UKRAINE FOR PROSPECTIVE IMPLEMENTATION OF PHYTOTECHNOLOGY TO WASTEWATER TREATMENT AND PROTECTION OF SMALL RIVERS AGAINST POLLUTION
Abstract
The paper aims at zoning of the territory of Ukraine for the needs of planning, design and situating the constructed wetland (CWs) facilities for wastewater treatment. Such zoning is based on GIS-modelling of geomorphology, climatic features and river basin delineation Ukraine.
Both geomorphological and climatic features make Ukraine suitable for wide implementation of CWs. However, such features as mean temperature of January (the coldest month), annual precipitation and relative humidity-aridity (measured as the ratio of annual precipitation to annual evapotranspiration) should be considered while calculating CWs treatment parameters.
Totally 10 ecological zones (30 districts) were identified and delineated. The most suitable for CWs implementation appeared ecological districts in the Podillya and Serednyorosiys’ka rolling plains, and the Middle-Dnieper and Pontic Lowlands, however the rest of districts are generally suited for this purpose, as well.
Keywords: climate features, geomorphology, phytotechnologies, river basins, water quality, water resources, zoning
