The article shows the relevance of improving the system of sustainable urban development, which is due to the importance of solving the problems of ensuring socio-economic development and growth of regions and the country as a whole. The research and conclusions are based on a systematic approach whereby sustainable development is a multilateral process. On the one hand, the sustainability of a city depends directly on the sustainability of higher-level socio-economic systems (region, state). On the other hand, the sustainability of the city influences the possibility of implementing the principles of sustainable development of these systems and directly depends on the sustainability of all the constituent elements that are part of the socio-economic system of the city (economic entities, non-governmental institutions, numerous associations of various forms of ownership and organizational form). The key indicators characterizing the level of development of the socio-economic system of the regions of Ukraine are analyzed. It is shown that the existing disparities and asymmetry of regional development are a rather complex and urgent issue that needs to be addressed. The systematic approach makes it necessary to pay more attention to the state of individual elements of regional systems - to the development and implementation of effective urban development management mechanisms. It is proved that cities play a key role in the process of achieving the strategic goals of sustainable development of the country, its regions, and, most importantly, in ensuring the increase of the standard and quality of life of every citizen of Ukraine. It is concluded that Ukrainian cities are quite diverse, they are unevenly distributed throughout the country, reflect the specifics of regional systems and significantly affect the level of development of the region. It is determined that the improvement of the system of management of socio-economic development of cities should be built as a proactive one, which is based on the awareness of the basic tendencies of development of the world economy and the key processes taking place at the level of the city system.
